This is direct additive method of sculpture by Giacometti, a Swiss born artist.

Giacometti experimentent with surrealism and cubism,among his assocates were Miro, Picasso and Max Ernst.

Most of his work are long, tall pieces with a bumpy surface, he seemed to be trying to reduce matter to to its furthermost viable limits.  He once said he was not sculpting the figure “but the shadow that it cast”.  Above is the bust of his brother Diego.
